What Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant that helps homeowners in England and Wales move away from fossil fuel heating. It has supported air source and ground source heat pumps since 2022 and was expanded in 2026 to include air-to-air heat pumps for the first time.

The grant is paid through your installer, so you don’t need to apply yourself. It’s a fixed amount, not means-tested and not based on your income.

What Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Cover?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a fixed £2,500 voucher that is applied directly towards the cost of installing an eligible air-to-air heat pump system. This reduces the upfront cost and makes low carbon heating and cooling more accessible for homeowners.

The grant is claimed by your MCS certified installer and deducted from your quote upfront, so you only pay the balance and don’t need to deal with any paperwork yourself.

Am I Eligible for the Air Conditioning Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

Eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme depends on several factors, including property type and existing heating system. In general, homeowners may be eligible if:

  • You own the property, as a homeowner or private landlord, in England or Wales

  • The property is residential and not a new build (some self-builds qualify)

  • The new system replaces your existing fossil fuel or electric heating, such as a gas, oil or LPG boiler, storage heaters or electric panel heaters

  • The system is designed to heat your whole home, not just one or two rooms

  • The system is installed by an MCS certified installer

Systems installed only for cooling, or to heat a single room alongside an existing boiler, don’t qualify. Social housing and properties that have already received government funding for a heat pump are also excluded.

Is Air-to-Air Right for My Home?

Air-to-air systems are often a good fit for flats, smaller homes, homes with electric or storage heaters, and properties where installing a full radiator-based heat pump would be disruptive or expensive. They’re less suited to homes with many small, separate rooms, where you’d need an indoor unit in each.

If an air-to-water heat pump would suit your home better, we’ll tell you. It qualifies for a larger £7,500 grant and also provides hot water.

How the Grant Works
